There are numerous initiatives that are also helping track progress in Africa. Below is a list of selected African indices produced by a broad number of sources. Please note that this list links to external websites.

Political

Corruption Perception Index

The CPI from Transparency International ranks 180 countries by their perceived levels of corruption (based on expert assessments and opinion surveys).

Global Peace Index

The GPI from Vision of Humanity provides the 2009 ranking for 140 countries regarding peace.

Freedom of the Press Index

From Freedom House. The index provides an annual survey of media independence in 195 countries and territories.

Cingranelli-Richards (CIRI)

The Cingranelli-Richards Human Rights Dataset from Binghamton University contains standards-based quantitative information on government respect for 15 internationally recognized human rights for 195 countries.

Economic

GINI coefficient or index

This index measures the inequality of income or expenditure distribution.

Index of Economic Freedom

from the Heritage Foundation. It covers 183 countries across ten specific freedoms such as trade freedom, business freedom, investment freedom, and property rights.

Africa Competitiveness Report

It is a ranking for African countries based on collaborative research from the World Economic Forum, the African Development Bank and the World Bank.

Ease of Doing Business

The Ease of Doing Business Project provides objective measures of business regulations and their enforcement across 181 African economies.

World Competitiveness

The IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) ranks and analyzes how a nation’s environment creates and sustains the competitiveness of enterprises.

Global rankings from UNESCO for net school enrolment rate (primary and secondary)

EFA Development Index

(Education for All Development Index - EDI)
The EFA Development Index (EDI) is a composite using four of the six EFA goals, including Universal primary education (UPE), Adult literacy, Quality of education and Gender.

Development/social

Human Development Index

Along with the Human Poverty Index 1 and 2 and the Gender Development index, the Human Development Index (HDI) from UNDP provides a summary of composite indices on human development including life expectancy at birth, the adult literacy rate and the combined gross enrolment ratio (GER) in primary, secondary and tertiary education and the GDP per capita expressed in purchasing power parity (PPP) US dollars.

Basic Capabilities Index

The Basic Capabilities Index (BCI) was developed by Social Watch as a tool to monitor the evolution of basic social indicators and compare them between and within countries.

Commitment to Development Index (CDI)

From the Center for Global Development rates 22 rich countries on how much they help poor countries build prosperity, good government, and security.

DARA Humanitarian Response Index

The DARA HRI measures the effectiveness of donors actions

Global Hunger Index

The GHI from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) measures various aspects of hunger and undernutrition including the proportion of people who are calorie deficient, or undernourished, the prevalence of underweight in children under five and the under-five mortality rate.

Governance

The Ibrahim Index of African Governance

is a comprehensive ranking of sub-Saharan African nations according to governance quality.

Index of Democracy

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s index of democracy provides a snapshot of the current state of democracy worldwide for 165 independent states and two territories.

Failed States Index

The FSI from the Fund for Peace focuses on the indicators of risk and serves to promote greater stability worldwide.

State Fragility Index

The State Fragility Index and Matrix comprises a 2x4 matrix of indicators (effectiveness and legitimacy indicators for security, governance, economic, and social dimensions of state performance) and composite indices of (il)legitimacy, (in)effectiveness, and state fragility.

Global Integrity Index

The index assesses the existence, effectiveness, and citizen access to key anti-corruption mechanisms at the national level in a country.

Open Budget Index

the OBI measures budgets transparency and accountabilty for good governance and poverty reduction purposes.
