Michael Keating, Executive Director of the Africa Progress Panel, to move to UN political office in Afghanistan

The Africa Progress Panel has announced that Michael Keating, Executive Director of the Secretariat, will be departing next month to take up an assignment with the UN political office in Afghanistan, with responsibility for development and governance issues.

Michael has directed the Secretariat of the APP since June 2008, supporting the work of the Panel members to track and encourage progress in Africa, and overseeing the work of the Secretariat, including the launch of two Africa Progress Reports and a growing portfolio of policy briefs and information notes.

Upon announcing his departure from the Africa Progress Panel, Michael Keating said:

“I move on from the APP Secretariat with a heavy heart. Working with the members of our Panel, and in particular with our Chair, Kofi  Annan, has been inspiring and a truly unique opportunity to engage with some of the most experienced and knowledgeable individuals in the world, each willing to use his or her time and reputation as advocates for Africa’s prosperity, development and human rights. .. Africa, where I was born and have spent half my life, will soon call me back, I am sure. But I cannot pass up the chance that has come my way to contribute to the UN’s efforts to find a peaceful outcome in Afghanistan.  Not only will her people benefit from success, but the whole world, including Africa.”

The APP are now recruiting for a new Director to support the Panel and direct the Secretariat.  Further information can be found here.
